Positioned Plagiocephaly - Flattened Head

What is Positional Plagiocephaly?

  • A persistent flattening on one side or the back of your baby’s head.
  • Results from muscular torticollis, prematurity or back sleeping.
  • May be common with multiple births.
  • Increasing numbers of babies noted over the past couple of years.

Signs & Symptoms include:

  • Flattening on one part of the head.
  • Ear on the flattened side pushed forward and/or one ear higher than the other.
  • Asymmetrical forehead, neck or jaw.
  • Asymmetrical eye size.
  • Tight neck muscles due to positioning of head to a preferred side.
  • With torticollis (shortening of neck muscle), see head turned/tilted to one side.
  • Babies may present with developmental delay due to weakness- can be subtle.
